Of all oddities in the animal kingdom, egg defects are among the most intriguing. Perhaps it's because the chicken egg is so ubiquitous that these eccentricities strike us not only as different, but strange and frightening. Which is why the below shell-less chicken egg, photographed by a Reddit user, is so interesting.

"My chicken laid an egg without a shell," wrote user Warlach. "It only got weirder from there..."

It's unclear exactly what's going on in the Reddit user's picture, but according to poultry resource The Poultry Site, eggs with very thin shells or no shells at all occur between .5 to 6 percent of the time. They're often produced by young domestic hens, particular ones that have matured early.

Previously, we've gawked over double-yoked eggs, oversized eggs and eggs inside other eggs. We have a feeling other weird eggs are out there.

From EatingWell:  February/March 2006, July/August 2012 This BBQ pulled chicken recipe is a fanciful reinterpretation of pulled pork that slow-cooks chicken in lots of tangy tomato sauce. Have sliced jalapenos, sliced red onions and some sour cream on hand to top this barbecue pulled chicken, which makes a hearty main course. You can turn it into an unbelievable sandwich or serve it on mashed potatoes or even whole-grain spaghetti. Serve with shredded napa cabbage tossed with low-fat mayonnaise, cider vinegar, celery seed and honey to taste.

From EatingWell:  July/August 2011 A Caribbean-inspired marinade for these chicken-and-pineapple kebabs is flavored with pineapple juice, soy sauce, plenty of spices and spiked with rum. It’s moderately spicy from the use of jalapeño, but not nearly as spicy as the well-known jerk marinade, which uses the extremely hot Scotch bonnet chile. If spicy-hot is not your thing, leave the jalapeño out or use half. The creamy banana salad is a soothing counterpoint, but skip it if you like.

From EatingWell:  January/February 2010 Both ripe and underripe mango work well in this chicken and vegetable stir-fry. If the mangoes you have are less ripe, use 2 teaspoons brown sugar. If they’re ripe and sweet, just use 1 teaspoon or omit the brown sugar altogether.
